Plant Replacement

Norwich Crown Court AHU Replacement

A phased air handling unit replacement programme delivered within Norwich Crown Court, maintaining ventilation, temperature control and operational continuity while replacing critical building services infrastructure.

Location
Norwich Crown Court
Client
Wates Smartspace
Scope
Staged strip out and replacement of eight air handling units within a confined rooftop and plantroom environment.

The Challenge

Norwich Crown Court required the replacement of eight ageing air handling units serving occupied courtrooms and public areas.

The project presented a number of operational and logistical challenges. Existing ventilation services needed to remain operational throughout the programme, while the available plantroom and rooftop space significantly restricted installation routes and working areas.

Maintaining fresh air supply, temperature control and uninterrupted building operation was a key requirement, placing careful planning and phased delivery at the centre of the project strategy.

The Solution

S-Worx developed a staged replacement programme designed to maintain service continuity throughout the works.

A temporary rooftop air handling unit was installed to provide ongoing ventilation while permanent systems were removed and replaced. Supply and extract ductwork was carefully routed to maintain safe roof access and ensure the building remained fully operational during each phase of the project.

The delivery strategy focused on minimising risk while providing a clear route for the replacement of critical infrastructure.

The Delivery

Successful delivery relied on detailed planning, stakeholder coordination and careful sequencing of works.

The project included the construction of a weatherproof platform and enclosure for temporary plant, installation of new ductwork, power supplies, pipework connections and integration with the building management system. Multiple crane operations were coordinated alongside scaffold access teams, temporary works engineers and specialist contractors.

A detailed lifting programme was developed from the outset, with each stage planned around operational requirements and access constraints.

Commissioning activities were carefully managed throughout the project to ensure ventilation performance remained compliant and environmental conditions were maintained across occupied areas of the building.

The Result

The project delivered the successful replacement of eight air handling units while maintaining ventilation services to occupied courtrooms and public areas throughout the programme.

Through careful planning, phased delivery and close coordination between project teams, S-Worx completed a complex infrastructure upgrade within a live operational environment while supporting the ongoing requirements of the court and its users.
